Personal Branding for Introverts & Finding Your Voice
Good company. Wherever you are.
Behind the conversation
Can you build a recognizable personal brand without becoming the loudest person in the room? Goldie Chan joins Howard to talk about finding your voice as an introvert, developing confidence through practice, and making room for the quieter parts of a creative life.
Goldie shares how her early LinkedIn videos grew into a platform for storytelling and connection, and why she wrote Personal Branding for Introverts. From practicing small talk in a coffee queue to taking quiet breaks at conferences, she explains how she approaches visibility without exhausting her introvert battery.
They go behind the scenes of writing a book: organizing ideas with Post-it notes, working with a developmental editor, and rebuilding the manuscript through multiple rounds of editing after her first publisher went bankrupt. Goldie talks about breaking an intimidating project into smaller steps and learning when to ask for help.
The conversation turns to the role of a personal brand beyond social media. Goldie reflects on shaping your reputation, sharing work that demonstrates your abilities, and building relationships before you need them. She also opens up about taking time away during cancer treatment and finding her way back to work with the help of her community, existing skills, and thoughtful conversations.
Goldie and Howard compare their experiences on stage, from forgotten equipment to the nerves of speaking to a small room. Goldie describes treating a keynote like a cozy conversation, improving through repetition, and bringing calm confidence to moments that don’t go to plan. They explore why being experienced doesn’t mean knowing everything, and why a little imperfection can make a speaker more human.
To close, Goldie shares her perspective on keeping personal branding personal in an age of AI, finding inspiration beyond your own industry, and learning from educators who genuinely want to help. Her advice for growing an audience centers on collaboration, including partnerships with peers and smaller creators, while respecting your own time and capacity.
In the guest’s words
“I think that introverts don't have to ever fully become extroverts to be successful.”
