Behind the conversation

The story.
The creative journey.

Beige has had a good run. Fergie joins Howard to make the case for more color, more personality, and a creative career that feels like your own.

She shares the reality of leaving corporate consulting for freelance life: a six-month financial cushion, a difficult first year, figuring out pricing, and finding clients through LinkedIn, old colleagues, and real-world connections. They talk about pitching even when the answer might be no, resisting comparison, and why being approachable can matter as much as the work in your portfolio.

The conversation moves into choosing color palettes, finding inspiration in fashion and print, and adapting a visual style to each client. Despite her Anti Beige name, Fergie explains why the right answer sometimes means stripping color away and letting photography do the talking.

They also explore using AI for ideation and expanding into video while keeping a designer’s perspective at the center of the work. It wraps up with typography favorites, accessibility, and the design trends Fergie would happily leave behind.
